Our Mission

What we do in a nutshell. . .

We strengthen institutions to strengthen their communities.

The Alliance of Academic Institutions and Programs (AAIP) helps small and private colleges and universities earn accreditation, keep it, and build the institutional strength to thrive long after. We are the partner in the room for the mission-driven institutions that American higher education too often leaves to fend for themselves — including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and others that serve first-generation and historically underrepresented students.

We believe the colleges often labeled “small” carry outsized importance. They keep higher education close to home, accessible, and accountable to the people it serves. When these institutions are strong, whole communities rise with them. When they falter, the loss falls hardest on the students with the fewest alternatives. AAIP exists to make sure that doesn’t happen.

What We Do

Accreditation is the gateway to an institution’s future — to federal student aid, to credibility, to survival. Yet the path to earning and maintaining it can overwhelm a small college with a lean staff and a tight budget. AAIP closes that gap.

Accreditation readiness. We help institutions prepare for accreditation from the ground up: honest gap analysis against an accreditor’s standards, self-study development, documentation, and the evidence that turns good intentions into a compelling case for approval.

Achieving accreditation. We guide institutions through the full process with a recognized accrediting agency — translating dense standards into a clear plan, preparing leadership and faculty for site visits, and helping a college present its mission and its work at their strongest.

Maintaining accreditation — and recovering it. For institutions facing reaffirmation, monitoring reports, probation, or the threat of losing accreditation, AAIP provides the focused, hands-on turnaround support that gets a college back on solid ground and keeps it there.

Institutional health. Accreditation rests on real foundations, so we work alongside institutions to strengthen them: sound governance, fiscal accountability, meaningful assessment of student learning, and academic programs aligned with the needs of students, employers, and the regions they serve.

How We Partner

Our model works like training wheels. When an institution needs to build or rebuild the systems that accreditation requires, AAIP provides the scaffolding to carry it through — but always with the goal of developing the college’s own durable, independent capacity, never to do the work for it indefinitely. A college that works with AAIP should come out the other side not just accredited, but genuinely stronger and able to stand on its own.

We are an ally to the institutions we serve, not their accreditor. The accrediting decision rests where it should — with the recognized agency. Our role is to make sure the institutions we believe in walk into that decision prepared, credible, and confident.

Our Vision

A higher education landscape where mission-driven institutions of every size have the support, the standards, and the recognition they need to thrive — and where no college serving its community has to face the road to institutional strength alone.
